Deepings opened the season with an incredibly close contest against Rushden & Higham, eventually being edged out 34–33 in a game that had plenty of positives for the lads to take forward.

Deepings started strongly and produced an impressive first half performance. There was some excellent running rugby, good support play and plenty of attacking intent as the lads showed what they are capable of.

Rushden & Higham worked their way back into the contest during the second half, however, and a tight game ultimately came down to the finest of margins.

The visitors crossed for six tries to Deepings’ five, while Deepings converted four of their tries compared with two from Rushden & Higham. There may still be a little debate over whether one of those conversions actually made it through the posts!

Naturally, the lads were disappointed with the final result, particularly after such a strong opening half, but there is absolutely no reason for heads to drop.

For the first game of the season, there was plenty to be proud of. Deepings went toe to toe with a good side, played some really positive rugby and showed plenty of character throughout.

The good news is there will not be long to wait for another opportunity.

Deepings travel to Rushden & Higham next week for a cup rematch, giving the lads the perfect chance to take the lessons from this game and put them into practice.

Tuesday’s training will focus on the areas we can improve, while continuing to build on everything that worked well today.

We know a little more about our opposition now.

Heads up, lads. Plenty to be proud of and plenty more to come.
