Deepings played host to the league leaders and form team, Stewarts & Lloyds, at the weekend. This game promised much and did not disappoint. 6 tries, 2 yellow cards, controversy, sublime flowing rugby followed by child like mistakes.
Deepings had the complete edge over S&L, however, they could not convert these chances whereas S&L were clinical which proved the decisive edge.
With Deepings taking the lead for most of the game, through tries by Mikey Wainwright and Billy Elliot, the game almost felt to have been won. This soon cost Deepings, slack play and surgical work by the S&L backs soon closed a 15 point gap and the Green Machine were on the back foot.
Driving the Deepings team forward was Man of the Match and Captain on the day, Ali Shaw, unfortunately his inspirational enthusiasm did boil over resulting in him getting a yellow card which proved costly, with Deepings conceding 7 points whilst he was off.
This lead could not be closed by Deepings and the disappointment was clear to see at the final whistle. Talking after the match Lee Beers said, “We are gutted to have lost from such a strong position. The team are gelling well and over the next few weeks, I will expect the results to come.”
