The Deepings team battled hard but ultimately fell to a defeat against a strong Cantabrigian II (Cantabs) side last Saturday, with the visitors' superior speed to the breakdown proving to be the decisive factor. Cantabs' quality backrowers were instrumental, consistently securing quick ball and enabling numerous set-piece plays that kept Deepings under pressure.
Despite the final score going against them, Deepings showed real fighting spirit, led by Captain Cieran Thompson. The skipper ignited the home side's comeback with Deepings' first try, and also demonstrated pinpoint accuracy with a 100% conversion rate from the kicking tee.
When Deepings managed to get the ball in hand, they looked sharp, with rugged (strongly made and capable of withstanding rough handling) scrum half Paul Robinson also crossing the whitewash to register a well-deserved try.
There were also stand-out performances that hint at a bright future for the squad. The returning duo of Adam Edwards and Joe Williams put in excellent shifts, showcasing the developing talent within the Deepings ranks.
Ultimately, Cantabs' control of the breakdown and resulting set-piece dominance gave them the edge, but Deepings will take confidence from their attacking flair and the leadership shown by their captain and the emerging talent.
