Deepings coach Tim Edwards admitted his under-strength side were involved in a ‘mismatch’ at Wellingborough Old Grammarians where they had a second league defeat of the season.
After a team of youngsters and university students held their hosts to a 17-0 scoreline in the first half, Old Grammarians exploited a tiring Green Machine XV to score another 33 unanswered points.
A combination of injuries, unavailability and the Rugby World Cup hampered the selection options, but Edwards said: “The boys stuck at it against a well-drilled team and the lads who came in did a sound job.
“A number of them were played out of position and because we were so short of numbers, three of the lads we had to bring in made their debuts.
“It was all hands to the pump to get a team out but despite that, we started alright before things went to pieces in the second half.
“They were pretty much at full strength so it was a bit of a mismatch which is disappointing because we’ve had some good results this year.
”We have a break this week which will help and in three or four weeks time, we’ll be a much happier squad.”
