Saturday, 9th October, 2010 Deepings – 46 Old Newts – 06

Deepings were back to their winning ways on Saturday with a 46 – 06 win over Leicester side Old Newtonians.

Starting the match with great intensity and emotion early points came when fullback, Oliver Peacock, cleverly fed aging wing Brian Ward, who ambled over the line from five meters out.

The home side maintained the pressure with their superior pack taking every opportunity to disrupt the visitors scrum. The pressure soon resulted in points, Centre, Vernon Horne picked up another two tries to add to his seasons tally, scrum-half, Hooker Ali Shaw was the only forward to get on the score sheet. Steve Corrigan also added a superb individual score. After missing kicking a “chip over the top” into his own face, he managed to recover the ball looped up and over the Old Newts full back and sprinted in from twenty metres to score under the posts.

Old Newts managed to force two penalties form errors made by Deepings and would surely have scored had it not been for the crunching try saving tackle from, Oli Peacock. James Buchan put in a strong personal performance and counted to the try tally he was narrowly beaten to the Man of the Match award by, young superstar Flanker, Michael Harrison.

The Deepings Saxons also had a convincing win over Sleaford III XV returning home 07 – 29 victors. Then on Sunday the Deeping Devils made it three from three with a fantastic 00 - 137 win over Standford le Hope ladies, an average of a try every four minutes of the game.

The weekend was overshadowed sadly, but a great and fitting tribute to Mrs Helen Buchan who passed away peacefully in her sleep shortly after 02:00am on Friday, 8th October 2010.

Helen was a Vice President of the club and huge Northampton Saints fan; all three of Helen’s sons have played for the club as has her Husband Alan who is now the club photographer. Helen had been battling cancer for many years and despite all those years of struggle, she continued to arrive at the club full of smile and cheer and support for the players and the game.

We offer our sympathy our love and support to Helen's family, her husband Alan and her three boys, James, Alex and David. Helen will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
