Saturday, 2nd October, 2010 St Andrews – 46 Deepings – 03

The honeymoon period came to an abrupt end for the Deepings IXV on Saturday as they suffered their first loss of the season away in Rugby.

Never has the saying “Age and treachery are no match for youth and talent” been so true. With a full strength squad the game would have a taken a different path but as the younger members of the Deepings team drafted into the weekends side found out, the first forty minutes were spent far from playing rugby but protecting themselves from the “off the ball” tactics so effectively employed against them.

In the second half St Andrews used their home advantage, with the wind and the hill in their favour they were able to unleash the pace from their wing and achieve the win.

Dan Hainsworth, Vice Captain, said after the match “We were simply unable to compete today through one thing and another, both the state of the game in the first half and the player availably this week but that’s the nature of the game though. After an indifferent last season, with the I XV suffering from injuries and a lack of consistency, the club made the decision to create a team of player coaches which proved invaluable so this season. This partnered with the influx of fresh, young talent has allowed the I XV to get back to winning ways, setting a high standard for the rest of the season. The newly named Saxons team allows for competition in all positions which is what the club needs to move forward you get games like today all the players will take something away from this and be better for it. Well done to Andy Akam for his Man of the Match performance, his tackle count and work were fantastic today and Brian Ward made a real difference out on the wing”

Deepings progressed through to the second round of the Hunts and Peterborough Cup the weekend before and welcome visitors Old Newtonians to Linchfield Road this coming Saturday 9th October, kick off is at 15:00pm. For all the DRUFC results and forthcoming fixtures, visit www.deepingsrufc.co.uk
