Deepings RUFC traveled to face Shelford III this past Saturday in a fixture that proved to be a testing encounter. It was a performance characterised by moments of high quality, though tempered by the frustrations of playing a very young, athletic opposition on their own turf.
The match dynamic shifted significantly when the set-piece went uncontested. While Deepings maintained a strong presence across the pitch, the lack of contested scrums played right into the hands of a youthful Shelford side, allowing them to keep the pace high and avoid the physical grind where Deepings often excel.
There were standout performances throughout the Deepings ranks, with the squad showing great resilience. Ultimately, while there are "bits to work on" back at training, the coaching staff viewed the afternoon as a positive step forward. The grit shown on the road provides a fantastic platform to build on as the team returns to home soil next week.
