Deepings RUFC v Spalding Dev XV 16th April 2011 Deepings – 53 Spalding - 10

The final IXV match of the season was marked with a friendly against a strong Spalding Development XV side. The friendly was hurriedly arranged after Northampton Mens Own, who the Green Machine beat 00-123 last year failed to fulfil their league commitment. Peter Ward, DRUFC Club President said “It was great of Spalding to but a team together at such short notice so we could entertain our Vice Presidents and our Match Day Sponsors, Meadows Taxation and Accountancy of Stamford would actually have a match to sponsor! And also to see off our outgoing IXV Captain of the last five seasons Nic “Nobby” Coupland. We even had supporters come up for the game from as far away as Bristol! So a huge thanks to Spalding for coming over to us”

The match started well for the home side with who opened the scoring and as the sun shone down the competition on the pitch was strong and the Development side of Spalding fought hard and more than earned their trys but with the top points scorer of the season to be settled between Vernon Horne who started the match on 19 trys (95 points) and Nick Dobie, who’s boot had earned him 96 points, the two of them set to battle it out. Vern went on to score three of Deepings 9 trys and Dobie was left some difficult touchline conversions and he managed to convert only 4 trys leaving Vernon as this year’s top scorer.

In his last game as skipper Nobby Coupland, predictably? Was awarded Man of the Match and was presented with gifts and a trophy by Match sponsor Meadows Taxation and Accountancy of Stamford. Nobby thanked the players and club for their support over his captaincy and he has vowed to play on next season, if selected, and continue to coach both the senior Mens and Ladies team.

With the rugby season drawing to a close the club is holding a whole host of summer social events, with the now regular Car Boot sales, the fantastic Beer Festival and then other family events such as a treasure hunt round Deeping, the Board Games Olympics and a World Record Attempt.
