South Claims Bragging Rights in Good Friday Spectacle

South Claims Bragging Rights in Good Friday Spectacle

Alexis Bennett5 Apr - 08:20

Local Pride. Local Rivalry. One Great Game.

Deepings RUFC played host to a magnificent display of grassroots rugby this Good Friday, April 3rd, as the North vs. South invitational match took centre stage. With one win each, this was the decider of the three matches. With a massive turnout of 47 players, the afternoon was a resounding celebration of the sport and its community.

The match featured talent from seven different clubs:
Bourne
Spalding
Deepings
Peterborough
Peterborough Lions
Thorney
St Ives

The Match
From the first whistle, it was clear that while the spirit was friendly, the competitive edge was sharp. The South team eventually took control of the momentum, showcasing some clinical finishing and expansive play. Despite a spirited fightback and several powerhouse tries from the North, the South’s coordination proved the difference.

Final Score: South 57 - 33 North

A Community Success
Beyond the scoreboard, the day was a triumph for the region. The touchlines were well-supported by a vocal crowd, and the hospitality at Deepings RUFC was second to none. The atmosphere in the clubhouse post-match proved once again that while the rivalry on the pitch is real, the camaraderie off it is what makes local rugby special.

A huge thank you to all the players who travelled to participate, the officials, and the volunteers at Deepings who made the event such a success. Mostly, thank you to John Sismey, Will Moore and Johnnie Smith for organising the matches.

See you all at the next one!
