You may have noticed the dust, the tools, and the physical signs of the “Conversion in Progress” project over the last week or two, culminating in the final full week over the 1st to 5th June. While the visible work is centred on the bar and the flooring, the heartbeat of this project isn’t about decor; it’s about survival and long-term stability.
As a volunteer-led club, every penny we invest into the infrastructure is a direct investment into the grass on the pitches and the shirts on the players' backs, everything, everything, is about the rugby. The reality of modern grassroots rugby is that a thriving, comfortable, and affordable social hub is the engine room that funds the playing side, providing the resources needed to provide for players every Saturday and Sunday.
This period of change isn't just happening inside the four walls of the clubhouse; it is also happening on the field. We know there has been much discussion regarding the decision to consolidate the Vets and 1XV into a single, unified squad. This wasn't a choice made lightly or without sentiment, but it was one made out of necessity.
Last season, we faced the harsh reality of the numbers: 10 players for one side and 12 for the other. This led to cancelled matches, heavy defeats, and a reliance on borrowed players that diluted our club identity and our membership income. To continue trying to run two struggling sides would have been a disservice to the history of both; to unite them is to ensure that Deepings RUFC actually has a future.
By consolidating for the forthcoming season, we are choosing quality over quantity. We are creating an environment where a full squad of 20+ players trains together, travels together, and plays for the same badge. This move eliminates the weekly stress of wondering if we can field a team and replaces it with a unified group where experience meets youth. It allows our coaches and captains to work with a singular vision, building a "One Club" culture where leadership and ideas are shared rather than divided.
This cohesion is the only way to stop the points being put against us and start building the momentum we need to grow back into a multi-team club in the years to come.
The "final destination" for Deepings RUFC is a club that is self-sustaining, competitive, and welcoming to all. By strengthening our revenue through an improved clubhouse and keeping our bar prices low, we create a financial safety net that allows us to focus entirely on rugby development. By uniting our playing squad, we ensure that the players we do have are supported by a full bench and a professional setup. We aren't just "fixing the bar" or "cutting a team", we are laying the foundation of a plan that ensures this club is still here in twenty, thirty, and fifty years' time.
Ultimately, all these moving parts—the new bar range, the unified squad, and the strategic leadership are aimed at the same goal: a stronger Deepings RUFC. We are building a home where players want to play and members want to stay. It requires a temporary "tactical reset" and a bit of patience as we navigate the transition, but the end result will be a club that no longer just "gets by," but truly thrives. We are moving forward as one pack, with one vision, and we thank every one of you for helping us make this conversion a success.
