The club was founded on 26 October 1982 and has played at its home at Linchfield Road Playing Fields in Deeping St James since the very beginning. Five years later, in 1987, the clubhouse officially opened its doors, establishing what would become known to generations of players and supporters as“The Home of Rugby Union in the Deepings.”
From those early days, the club has grown into far more than somewhere to play rugby. It has become an important part of the local community, bringing together players, coaches, volunteers, supporters, families and friends through a shared love of the game.
Over the years, countless players have proudly pulled on a Deepings shirt. Some have progressed through the club’s mini and junior sections, while others discovered rugby later in life. The club has provided opportunities across mini, junior, senior, veterans’ and women’s rugby, helping people of different ages and backgrounds enjoy the sport.
There have been memorable victories, difficult defeats and many hard-fought afternoons on the pitch. However, the real history of Deepings RUFC cannot be measured by results alone. It can be found in the friendships made in the changing rooms, the volunteers working behind the scenes, the parents standing on the touchline and the generations of families who have made the club their sporting home.
Deepings has always embraced the social traditions of rugby too. From quiz nights and charity events to beer festivals and community gatherings, the clubhouse has provided a welcoming meeting place for members and visitors alike. The club’s published history reflects that combination of fierce rivalry on the field and lasting friendship away from it.
The club is affiliated with the Hunts and Peterborough County Rugby Union and the East Midlands and Eastern Counties Rugby Union, maintaining its place within the wider rugby family while continuing to represent the Deepings with pride.
As we celebrate 44 years, we remember everyone who has helped build the club since 1982. The founders who started it, the players who represented it, the coaches who passed on their knowledge, the volunteers who kept it running and the members and supporters who created its unique atmosphere.
The club’s story is still being written. New players will wear the shirt, new volunteers will step forward and new memories will be created, but the values at the heart of Deepings RUFC will remain the same: rugby, friendship, family and community.
Happy 44th birthday to Deepings Rugby Union Football Club.
Here’s to everyone who has been part of the journey, and to many more years at the Home of Rugby Union in the Deepings.
