Saturday 5th September 2015 Wisbech 35 – 5 Dinosaurs

The dinosaurs took a scratch side over to Wisbech with a number of new faces on the bus. Gareth Hennis and Kelvin Squires were both playing their first ever senior game and Dale Moore was in his second ever game. Wisbech had a full second team squad packed with young talent and the Dinosaurs eyed up the speedy youngsters with a little apprehension. The game was preceded by a minute’s silence for Mike Broughton, their winger and kicker that sadly passed away in June of this year.

We knew that we would have a slow start as we got used to a number of new players and positions never mind learning each other’s names. Sure enough the first half was dominated by the Wisbech backs who ran in 4 tries through some excellent handling and sheer pace. Up front the Dinosaurs were in control with a front row totalling 155 years old who were able to teach the youngsters in the opposition a thing or two about the art of coarse rugby!

At half time Wisbech swapped both second rows, a prop and scrum half with their first team who were playing on the next pitch. Sadly for them the Dinosaurs stepped up to the mark and were even more dominant in the scrum! At 60 minutes, following a period of prolonged pressure Kirk Green crashed over to score for the Dino’s in the corner. It was all one way after that with the Dinosaurs camped in the Wisbech half but to give them their due Wisbech were resolute and determined in defence, denying the Dinosaurs another try. In the last play of the game Wisbech nipped over to score under the posts after a quick penalty and the half ended one try all.

Man of the match was awarded to Kelvin Squires after a fantastic display of pace and tackling. Donkey of the day went to Stuart McCabe (described by Jason Whalley as the shortest man on the pitch) who managed to get penalised for making a high tackle.
Wisbech were excellent post match hosts and everyone enjoyed a full court, boat race and several drink offs before a proper sing song on the bus home. Dinosaur virgins were dropped off short of the club house in the traditional attire which definitely included a club tie!
