New Deepings IXV captain has set his stall out for a top-five position in Midlands Four East (South) this season.

"It’s been quite enjoyable so far and all the lads have made it easier by training hard, but the hard work is yet to come"
- Deepings first XV rugby captain Guy Cunningham

A change of on-the-field leadership has taken place for the Green Machine with Guy Cunningham succeeding Gareth Silverwood as skipper.

But the arrival of Andy Cuthbertson in the back row after a spell at university and debutant Kelvin Squires showing promise on the wing, Cunningham is hopeful that opposition sides will find Linchfield Road an unhappy hunting ground this season.

Cunningham said: “It’s different being captain and there’s a lot of work to it, but it’s been quite enjoyable so far and all the lads have made it easier by training hard.

“But the hard work is yet to come and we have a lot of lads who have either come through the junior system or have finished university who are keen to play.

“We’ve also had a few people who have come back from other clubs who have helped us have a couple of good training sessions.”

Deepings open their season at home to Sileby Town, with the first leg of their A15 derby with Bourne not scheduled until November 14.

Silverwood said: “We’ve had a successful pre-season so it’s definitely going to be exciting with all these new guys coming in.

“We also have a new coach in Tim Edwards who has decided to help us out on Tuesday and Thursdays.

“Tim was a very hard back row player, so he’s got some experience and and some good plans that everyone is on the same page with.”

Deepings don’t face cup rugby until October 3 and Cunnigham said: “I’d like to say that we’re going to be in the top five - with a chance of top three.”
