At the inaugural U7 & U8 tag rugby festival attended by 8 clubs fielding approximately 170 children the Dragons U7s had a very successful morning enjoying some great rugby and positive results.
We fielded 2 teams in the U7 age group - Deeping Ridgebacks & Deeping Horntails.
The Ridgebacks played 5 matches and continued their unbeaten start to the season, winning all 5 games against Sleaford, Spalding, Huntingdon, Peterborough & Stamford, playing exciting rugby with the key strengths being the pressing at the tag tackle and some great individual running throughout the team.
The squad have taken on board the desire to attempt to pass before they are tagged and this is beginning to become part of their game, a tremendous effort at this age and stage of their rugby careers.
It was pleasing to see all players get on the score sheet throughout the morning, with Jack scoring his first ever tries, Landen providing a solid 11 tries, Henry growing in confidence and grabbing himself 6 tries through the morning, Georgia scoring a few times and a mention too for Joseph who scored an impressive 30 tries through the 5 matches and is beginning to lead the team in a mature way.
Very pleasing performances and still things to build on as very early in the season.
The Horntails also played 5 matches, with very tough and close matches they managed 1 win and some narrow defeats losing by the single try against both Peterborough and Bourne.
Particularly pleasing from the Horntails was the fact that no ball was given away from stepping out of touch or from forward passes, and the squad were also looking to pass the ball before the tag.
Tries were scored throughout the team with Eddie and Harrison leading the way and again there is plenty to build on at such an early stage of the season.
Both teams had an enjoyable morning and played with a great spirit, big thanks from the coaches.
It would be remiss of me not to mention a big thank you to all who helped put on the festival, all the volunteer helpers, our sponsors, and the players and parents of every club for attending.
Positive feedback was received from all clubs attending with a request to run the festival next year, hope to see you then!
