Deeping Dragons U7s v St Ives
By Matt Allen
The smallest Dragons give a mighty roar!
Almost a full squad travelled to St Ives for the first match of the season, with 11 players taking part, a fantastic effort from players and parents.
being able to field 2 teams enabled us to give plenty of match time to everyone, with all players making a contribution to a great squad effort.
The players were tasked with some key objectives for the morning: no running into touch, no wild or throw away passes, no forward passes and to play as a team, not just passing to their favourite team mate. As a coach I am so pleased that all of the players achieved this, resulting in a great morning of rugby with many compliments from the St Ives coaches.
With 6 matches played, 6 minutes each half, we managed to fit in 3 games so all players had plenty of game time. Scores are not important in the grand scheme of things, it is the manner in which the squad played, their attitude and listening to the coaches that is most important. Having said that, it is also pleasing to finish the morning with 5 wins out of the 6 matches played.
The squad showed some great running, not just 1 or 2 but throughout the squad. The support play was very good and we even managed to get some passing away before a tag was made. Many players scored tries which is also pleasing as the points are spread around. Some great displays of tagging from both teams, although when I am reffing the players need to remember to hand the tag to their opposition and not to me (as we do in bulldog!!).
Thanks must go to the support that I had on the day from Chris Maddison and Andy Leadbetter, without your help I couldnt referee and that would mean less game time for the squad. Also thank you to the parents for their support and encouragement.
Onwards and upwards, its a great start for the first matches of the season, next up is our very first festival at Deeping Rugby Club, a good test to see how we are developing against our peers in the region.
