Another massive mountain to climb!

Deepings had yet another massive mountain to climb in what is becoming a very tough season for the first team, IXV. For the first time this season the club managed to travel away from home with a full contingent of 18 men.

After a long and entertaining road trip to Luton which saw Jack 'Billy' Elliot score his first “3 points” for the IXV it was back to business after the Christmas break.

During the warm up Deeping lost their muscle bound Centre, Nathan Pound, to a Hamstring pull which was a massive blow to morale. Chris Day was available to replace the injured Centre who was of similar caliber to the mighty Pound.

The first whistle went and Deeping started the game well. With Bell senior taking on the whole Stockwood pack from the kick off and getting a bloody nose for his hard work. The first 15 minutes of the game was a flurry of fast paced attack from both sides with aggressive defence. Deeping carried out some outstanding tackling in this period and some slick lines of attack were being manufactured with some very positive results.

At the 20 minute mark Deeping lost scrum half Cunningham to a Hamstring injury. Cunningham had been kicking like a mule for this period and had Stockwood pinned back in their 22 under great pressure with his accurate aerial bombing. Through his gritted, massive, teeth Cunningham decided to leave the field due to his injury, the young Adam Edwards replacing him.

At the 25 minute mark Stockwood found their Mojo, impressive fitness, strength & handling skills outclassed the Deeping boys and the flood gates opened. It was a fantastic display of running rugby and unfortunately Deeping could not match them.

Good performances were seen from James 'Rosé' Clark who is set to be a massive asset to the Deeping pack, Clayton Bell, junior, showed the senior players that he wants a first team shirt going forward, Adam Edwards proved that he can take on men double his size and knock them to the ground. Billy Elliot had a nasty injury mid-way through the 2nd half after some powerful running in the centres, we wish him well & a speedy recovery.
There are positives from such a one sided affair. Deeping RUFC achieved a full team of players for an away fixture, the lads who played have got an overwhelming spirit and passion for the team and the club and the most important area is that we are blooding new players for the future of the club in very tough a competitive league for a small town club.

This weekend, 18th January, we entertain Biggleswade at Home, we look forward to your touchline support, 14:15pm kick off.
