On a perfect day for running rugby, Deepings hosted Bedford Queens.
The weather caused the game to be played at a very high pace with the ball being flung wide at every opportunity.
Deepings were probing the defence left and right and eventually, Steven Corrigan, added tempo from scrum half and Ali Shaw showed hands of a back, Dan Hainsworth coasted over. The conversion was an exceptional one from the sideline. This dominance did not pay though as Queens battled back and through mistakes from Deepings and safe play from the visitors, they came right back into the game through penalties. This work was undone by a moment of inspiration from Matty Newman, catching a clearance and skating across the pitch he gave Dan Young another easy score in the corner.
If the first half was Deepings, then the second half was Queens. The visitors caught and drove with German like efficiency and scored 2 tries from line outs. Another lapse in concentration saw the scrum half run from the half way and score another individual effort. Not to be outdone, Fly-half Alex Arch, ran in from just as far for another incredible score for Deepings. Unfortunately the penalties cost Deepings, other than that, it was a dominant performance and with the new blood in the team, things are looking up.
