Green Machine v Bedford Swifts

The lack of finishing off set piece moves kept Swifts in the game until the final whistle. Deepings, whilst not necessarily the overly dominant side, held on to 60% of ball possession on Saturday but knock on’s and missed passes cost them, back to the training ground!

The first score though went to Deepings, Swifts gained a scrum from a Deeping knock-on just inside their 10 metre line, the second row struck the ball in the scrum a little too energetically sending out past the No8. With his cat like reactions Deepings No. 6, Lewis Cannell(photo), broke off and with a perfectly weighted toe poke, sent the ball through the Swifts dis-arranged back line. The ball bounced and bounced again and then sat up for Cannell to scoop it in his arms. With bandy legs pumping he set off for the try line with scrum half, Lance Charity, jogging alongside in support. As the two neared the try line the Swifts defence closed in but Charity was able to power Cannell over the line for his first try in four seasons.

A conversion and further penalty kept Deepings ahead as Swifts battered their way through the Deepings defence early in the second half for their try. The game was postponed eight minutes from the end and pitches had to be changed when a Swifts player broke their ankle. An ambulance attended and he was taken to Peterborough A&E. We wish him a swift recovery.

Deepings IXV are away to Brackley and on Sunday 30th the Ladies travel down to Leighton Buzzard.
