Deepings struggled to string play together on Saturday as they came together for the first time. Having already played Lincoln in a cup match the week before Stamford played well as a team and were more settled than Deepings. Deepings should have played Thorney in the Hunts & Peterborough Cup in the previous week, but after confirming the fixture Thorney had to cancel the match stating they were unable to field a team. As they will now be unable to complete the fixture before the deadline set by the H&P Rugby Union Deepings automatically qualify for the second round of the cup.
The Green Machine went into the game on Saturday that little bit less battle hardened. Using the wind in the first Stamford kicked 3 penalties in the first half and being that bit match fitter ran in two converted tries in the second half.
The Deepings team struggled with building up their phases and their only try came from No8. Ali Shaw who powered through the Stamford defence to score with Nick Dobie converting. The only other chance for points for Deeping came by way of a second half penalty kicked again by Dobie.
The new IXV skipper, Dan Hainsworth, was disappointed but upbeat after the loss, “It’s our first game, things are always a bit rusty after spending the summer on the shelf, we will get the WD40 out in training this week, make a few positional changes and look forward to going of to Bedford Queens next Saturday”
