Hard truths come home to roost at Deepings

Deepings have to take the tough medicine of hard training if they are to achieve anything this season.

Deepings prop Gareth Silverwood has warned his side to take the tough medicine of hard training if they are to achieve anything this season.

The message came after a heavy defeat at Queens who racked up the points, despite Deepings’ early dominance in the scrums. But a penalty by kicker Chris Owen was all the Green Machine had to show for their promise in forward play as Bedford-based Queens cut loose in the last 20 minutes.

Silverwood said: “It’s not the result we wanted, although we struggled to get a team out because of injuries in key positions. We went across with 18 players, including Ally Reid who made his first-team debut in what was a baptism of fire for him."

“Ally got on the pitch and did the job that was needed, as did all 15 lads who played on Saturday."

“We were very dominant up front and up until 60 minutes, the game was very close. But we couldn’t convert our domination into points and in the last 20 minutes, Queens had a more expansive game plan and used their strong backs to test our lack of fitness.

“We’re not getting the numbers for training so we can’t pull off the game plan in matches and, as a forward, to be dominant for 80 minutes but come away with no tries and a big loss is frustrating."

“Everyone knows what we need to do and it’s down to individuals to come down to training, put the graft in and turn our dominance into wins.”
