Green Machine v Bedford Queens
Deepings I XV – Bedford Queens
Saturday, 18th September
Deepings – 55
Queens – 05
Deepings ran in nine tries for a creditable win over Bedford Queens on Saturday, running out eventual 55-05 winners.
The score-line by no means reflected the hard work that Queens put into the contest, and Deepings will have to be wary of the return fixture in Bedford.
It took the tenacity of the pack once again to steady the ship against a fired up scrum from the visitors, outstanding performances from Levan Stapleton and Nobby Coupland held it for the home side though, and as the set piece possession started to build up, so the Deepings started to score the points.
Vernon Horne with his now customary speed bagged five tries in total, and it was the defence of him and Dan Hainsworth in the centres that resulted in errors in the opposition back line, and from this turnover ball Deepings were able to force the game in their favour. A well worked move and the pace of Reece Harry saw him over the line in the corner, and as the teams turned round it was clear that Deepings were on top.
Further scores from Hooker Ali Shaw (2), and Full Back Oli Peacock all contributed to the eventual total, and with four conversions by Nick Dobie and one from Levan Stapleton the match was decided.
Captain, Nobby Coupland will be happy that his team seemed to recover from a lacklustre performance last week with some good rugby, but will expect them to be fired up for what will be a crunch match against Thorney on Saturday, 25th Sept in the opening round of the Hunts & Peterborough Cup. Kick of is at 15:00pm at Linchfield Road, all the details are on the club website, www.deepingsrufc.co.uk
