Deepings – 08
Thorney – 07
Deepings secured their place in the next round of the H&P Cup with a less than glamorous 08-07 win over local rivals Thorney on Saturday. This is the first time the two clubs have met since Deeping started moving up the leagues three seasons ago.
The match was full of handling errors resulting in over forty scrums which set the very stop / start nature of the game. Although the score does not reflect this, Deepings enjoyed the majority of the play with their forwards dominating the game up front and when the back line managed to string together more than two passes together their ability shone through.
The break through to open the scoring came in the 22nd minute when stand-in Fly-half, Oli Peacock, pounced on a loose ball and with some imaginative thinking fed Wing, Brian Ward, who broke the gain line and was able to release Centre Vernon Horne who finished of the move with a searing sprint to the try line from 40 yards out.
Deepings other points came from a penalty awarded in the second half and taken by Scrum-half Steven Corrigan.
Lewis Cannell was awarded the Man of the Match and Ross Mclean gave a solid performance in his first start for the Green Machine.
Deepings are looking to continue their unbeaten start to the season and make it four from four when they travel away to Rugby St. Andrews this coming Saturday, 2nd October.
